September 7, 2010, marks a momentous day for the Elyria Schools and the city of Elyria. Phase one of the new Elyria High School will be complete and students will enter their new school for the first time on this special day. The first wing to open is the academic building which includes the classroom spaces and labs, music rooms and the auditorium. The second phase of the building project includes the athletic complex, dining facilities and renovated Washington Building, and these spaces will be complete in the 2011-2012 school year. EHS students will return to school in stages by grade level as we orient them to their new school. We are keeping parents apprised of the construction progress and plans for student orientation, and will post the information to www.elyriaschools.org once it has been finalized. Each day that passes brings us closer to what will begin a new era in Elyria City School District history. We appreciate Elyria voters for investing in education and rebuilding Elyria High School. We will host a grand opening for the new high school and offer tours in November, after the staff and students have settled into their new surroundings. We look forward to seeing you there! Please remember that children who attend Elyria Schools are on summer break through September 6th -- drive carefully and watch for children crossing streets. All Elyria School buildings reopen on August 19th and office staff will be available to serve you. School resumes for all students on September 7th. If you have a child who will be five years old by September 30, 2010, now is the time to register for kindergarten. You may do so at the Elyria Schools Administration Building, 42101 Griswold Road, until August 19th. From that date forward, you may register at your neighborhood school. To enroll, you will need a birth certificate, social security card, two proofs of residency, immunization records and proof of custody (if applicable). Early kindergarten registration gives parents and children the opportunity to plan for school and to look forward to the first day together. This is often an emotional transition for children and parents alike, so early planning helps smooth the process and soothe the nerves! This year is a year of new beginnings for Elyria City Schools. Thank you for continuing to support Elyria's children and school district. We look forward to sharing what's to come with you! Sincerely,
|
